First Describer of the German Longhair

Prof. Dr. Schwangart worked from 1902 to 1907 at the Zoological State Collection in Munich. He acted as the Chairman of the Royal Bavarian Research Station and lecturer at the University of Karlsruhe. In 1914 he began his work as a professor at the Technical University of Dresden in Tharandt in the field of forestry and general zoology. In that time Schwangart lived in Kötzschenbroda, a town near Dresden. In 1933 he moved back to Munich (Gräfelfing).

His specialty was soon the German wild and domestic cats. 1928 his essay „Zur Stammes- und Typenkunde der Hauskatze“ was published.. This was followed almost every year by new books, essays and articles which dealt more intensively with the subject cat - domestic cat –purebred cat - wildcat. Schwangart himself was convinced that one person should never hold more than two or three cats, so he had probably not even many cats. His first and most beloved breed was the shorthair tiger in wild colours (forerunner of BSH and CSH). There are also some images in his works, such as his stud “Milo vom Jakobstein”, a grey tiger (photo below).

  His scholar and later director of the zoo in Dresden, Prof. Dr. Hans Petzsch, wrote in the preface of his book "The Cat" (1971) over Schwangart: "... I dedicate this post festum paperback in lasting devotion to the great german wild and domestic cats researcher Professor Dr. Friedrich Schwangart, my former teacher in this meritorious mammalian specialty at the former Technical University of Dresden ...".
